Legislation introduced in January 1997 states that any person wishing to become an LGV driver that only holds a full car driving licence must: |
|
|
|
- Be 21 years of age |
|
- Have a medical checkup |
|
- Apply to Swansea for a Provisional Licence |
|
- Take and pass the Theory Test |
|
- Pass the Driving Test in a Rigid Vehicle Licence (LGV Category C) |
|
- before progressing on to an Articulated Vehicle Licence (LGV Category C and E) |
|

The above does not apply to those who already hold a Full LGV Licence (Category C) and wish to upgrade to an Articulated LGV Licence (Category C and E). An application to Swansea is required to have this entitlement included on the Licence. |

To obtain a provisional class C licence you must apply to the D.V.L.A. by:
1.Completing the enclosed form D2. ( Request an Information Pack )
2.Enclosing a prescribed “Medical” examination certificate (D4),
provided by your GP (we can arrange for such an examination by a GP should you prefer).
This medical has to be paid for and typically costs in the region of £25.00 with an associated GP
3.The provisional licence application is now free. This has to be posted to the D.V.L.C. with the above.

Class C (Rigid)
All types of rigid vehicles over 7.5 tons,
but excluding any trailer (drawbar)over 750kg
Class C + E (artic)
Any articulated vehicle, any other L.G.V.
or combination of vehicle and drawbar trailer.

7.5 Tonne Training C1 - Rigid vehicle 3.5 tonnes up to 7.5 tonnes
Any vehicle between 3.5 & 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight.
The 7.5 tonne training and test is the same as the Category C but in a smaller lorry.
Minimum Age: 18
- You must have passed the Category B test (car).
- You will need to pass the LGV theory test before taking the C1 driving test.
When you have passed your C1 theory test and decide to move onto Category C you will not have to do another theory test.
Normal Duration: 3-5 days
Price - As Class C above.
