Imagine that as a parent, your child is playing close to an electric fire. You notice the child keeps getting closer to the fire, the child notices that the fire gives off warmth.
So in a naturally inquisitive way, the child reaches out to put its hand on the fire.
WHAT DO YOU DO??
You firmly shout - "Don't touch the fire or you will burn your hand!!"
The child instinctively withdraws its hand from the fire, the danger is averted and the child learns a valuable lesson.
In short, to analyse the fault means to tell me why it is wrong to do it and what the possible problems could be if i kept doing it.
Basically give me the worst case scenario of what could happen if I don't follow your advice.
Imagine we are coming upto a closed junction to emerge left and I go to pull out without the minimum observations to right, left, right.
As soon as it appears I'm going to let the car keep rolling, you would either shout "wait!!" or "Stop!!" or hit the brakes. Then when we pull up at the side of the road you would say to me
"So Chris at that last junction you went to pull out without taking the minimum observations of right, left and right again. Now as it was a closed junction and we couldn't see what was coming, If i'd have let you pull out then and there was a 40 ton artic coming from the right, which side of the car would he smash into first?"
"MINE"
"That's right, so whose ribs and chest would have borne the brunt of his front bumper at 30 miles per hour?"
(looking down) ME!
"That's right, i would of been okay, because as it impacted into you the air bags would be deployed and by that time I would be nicely cushioned from the worst of it, but I wouldn't fancy your chances much!"
Now what about not looking to the left? What would happen if a car that had just driven past us, pulled up on the left near the corner, we would have slammed into the back of it!
"What if a car had been parked on the opposite side of the road? Any vehicles coming past it would have been on our side of the road to get past it. So we would have gone head first into them!!"
Now the pupil understands the importance and the seriousness of why you are asking them to do these things. Therefore they are more likeky to understand and apply what they are being taught.
What do they need to do to make sure that the fault does not happen in the first place or at least does not happen the second time?
If you can say "wait!!" or "Stop!!" before it happens then great! Thats applying a remedy. But if not it comes back to applying the commentary section of your training.
"OK Chris we're approaching our closed junction to emerge left, so if you'd like to start applying your approach routine.......Good, now don't forget we are going to look right, left, and right before we pull out, so look right, is it safe do we have any bikes, people or cars that we need to consider? Look left is it safe do we have any bikes, people or cars to consider?"
