If you passed your car test BEFORE January 1st 1997, you are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination upto 8.25 tonnes MAM (maximum authorised mass).
If you passed your car test AFTER 1st January 1997 (including re-tests if you had your licence revoked), you are restricted to vehicles upto 3.5 tonnes MAM. towing a trailer upto 750 kgs MAM or a vehicle and trailer combination upto 3.5 tonnes MAM. If you wish to tow a trailer that exceeds these weight limits, you will need to pass an additional driving test to gain a B+E licence entitlement for towing a trailer or caravan.
If the above conditions aren't met exactly it could result in the driver of the trailer or caravan being unlicensed and therefore uninsured, which can carry a maximum of 9 penalty points and a fine of upto £1000 and in some cases even a ban.
The B+E car and trailer driving test.
*The car and trailer test lasts approx 1 hour and is based on the LGV test.
*The test comprises elements at the test centre and on the roads.
*Show an ability to perform safety checks on your vehicle an trailer
*Perform a reversing exercise
*Perform an emergency braking test
*Include a road drive, demonstrating advanced observation, use of speed and management of space to LGV standards.
*Perform unhitching and recoupling.
Trailer training.
Without proper trailer training, many people fail the trailer towing test on the standard of their road driving, so all of our trailer training instructors are friendly and professional as well as being extremely patient. We believe learning should be an enjoyable expereience and whether you are learning in telford, shrewsbury, oswestry, welshpool or wolverhampton, we will train you to tow with skill confidence and safety.

Trailer towing training course options.
2 hour assessment.
We strongly recommnd that youtake advantage of this assessment. This allows us time to assess your general driving whilst towing and your reversing ability. From the outcome of this we can decide on the best trailer training course for your needs.
1/2 day trailer towing course.
This course is designed for someone who does not require the B+E test but would like additional training in towing and reversing or someone who would rather spread there training over a few weeks rather that an intensive 2 or 3 days.
1 Day trailer training course
This is for someone who has recently fail their B+E driving test, or who has a lot of experience in trailer towing. This course has the test at the end of the day.
2 day trailer towing course.
This is for someone with a lot of experience in towing and is fairly confident with reversing. This course again has the B+E driving test at the end of the second day.
3 day trailier training course.
For someone with limited experience in towing a trailer or caravan and is not confident on reversing. This course concludes with the B+E driving test at the end of the third day.
4 day trailer towing course.
This course is for people with no previous experience of towing or reversing. This courses concludes with the B+E driving test at the end of day 4.
Each day consists of a full days training with a half hour lunch break. Each trailer towing course covers all aspects of the B+E driving test, including the reversing exercise,controlled stop and the independent driving section. Also included are the coupling and uncoupling processes, along with all other aspects of trailer safety.
